because while using optics u can easily see the light and measure the wave length using spectrometer and u cant measure the frequency without knowing wavelength since wavelength=speed of light / frequency .while using microwaves they cant be seen and wavelengths cant be measured directly without knowing frequency which is measured by oscilloscope or CRO.
